Honey is a sweet, viscous foodstuff that is made by bees in different ways. For instance, it may be collected from wild bee colonies or domesticated beehives. Wild bee nests are sometimes located by following a honey-guide bird. As estimated, a hive can produce about 65 pounds (29) kg per year. This product has a long shelf life since it has special chemical properties. This food substance, if it is original and natural, can be preserved for even centuries.


In 2017, global production of honey was about 109 MT, by China with 29% of the world market share. Other major producers were Iran, Turkey, the US, and Ukraine.


It is highly used in cooking, baking, desserts, and is also used as a sweetener in different drinks and foodstuffs.


Nutrition Fact of Honey

The product is very nutritious and rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and other essential nutrients. As a matter of fact, it contains about 17% water, 82% carbohydrates, 22-35% Glucose, and 28-41% Fructose. It has a low content of fat, fiber, and protein. One spoon of honey, which is about 15ml, can provide near 46 kcal of energy.

Honey Gradings

Honey’s grading is A, B, C, and less than C, according to quality and preservation. Grade A, has a good, normal flavor and contains no defects. Its color is clear and shiny. This grade of honey may have air bubbles or a trace of pollen grains that do not affect the quality of the product negatively. Honey also has grade B, which is reasonably good, clear, and shiny in color. On the contrary, grade C or less are much different from the above-mentioned grades since their water content is more than the standard rate and they are less natural than grades A & B.

Indicators of Quality

Fragrance, taste, and consistency are important factors in indicating the quality of honey. If this food substance is the high quality and fresh one, it flows from a knife in a straight stream, without breaking into separate drops. Good to know that natural and high-quality honey must have viscosity If not, it shows that this is not that much high in quality.
